NYT transcript and pix of John Edwards's "quit"

Not knowing if it will be posted, I have already offered this comment to NYT on the transcript, 1/30/08:

I was both glad and sad to see the online NYT change itself from Alex Brandon's picture of downcast John and Elizabeth Edwards to Lori Waselchuk's picture of the Edwards family striding-forth.

As the lead(s) to your transcript of his "campaign suspension" speech in New Orleans, both together caught exactly what I felt at the time of hearing to actual speech live on TV.

I regret how much we have lost as Democrats by dodging the issues of poverty and trade unionism as legitimate markers of our social conscience.

Despite all the inane quibbling about Edwards's "pretty rich boy" appearance and how it struck some people as inauthentic, I remain convinced of his and Elizabeth's passionate devotion to great political causes in the grand tradition of democracy and, I must add, of Christianity--to care and act in behalf of the least among us, the voiceless, for whom John Edwards has valiantly spoken during this campaign.

I miss him already but hope that he can continue to influence our national thinking.

[OK, so he's a womanizing slime, but his ideas about America are right.
